PS Contemporary British Women Writers : Course Description

Course Description ^top

subject area: literature
language: English

In this course, we will explore the wide variety of contemporary British writing by female authors. Many of the writers covered in this class – Jeanette Winterson, Michèle Roberts, Jackie Kay, Sarah Waters and Bernardine Evaristo – were inspired by feminism, but their texts cannot be labelled as 'merely' feminist. We will therefore cover topics such as history, (trans)gender, masculinity, religion, postcolonial and regional (Scottish) identity, genre (fairy tales, myth) and class.

Students attending this course should have finished reading at least Winterson's Sexing the Cherry and Roberts's Daughters of the House by the beginning of the winter term. All students are required to do a brief oral presentation. As PS Literature is also meant to introduce you to research and writing practices for seminar papers, students should be prepared to hand in at least one research assignment and to write brief reading responses on a regular basis.
